7 Best Strategy Games of All Time
27 Dec 2021
Strategies are some of the most popular games available. They appeal to just about every kind of gamer. Some are fast-paced, but most of them are slow and thoughtful. They allow players to experience the joy of building a civilization, the thrill of creating an army, the triumph of conquering a foe, and the rush of destroying an enemy base.
In this article, I will be listing what I feel are the 7 best strategy games of all time. This list is based on my personal preference, and so it is in no way definitive. Games are listed in no particular order.
Age of Mythology
Age of Mythology is a real-time strategy computer game. The game was developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios. The game has four playable civilizations: Egyptians, Norsemen, Atlanteans, and Greeks. It is noted for its distinctive mythology-based content and features.
Help Rohan, Zeus, Thor, and other Greek and Norse Gods fight against the Egyptian Gods in this epic battle of good versus evil. Choose from over 20 different Gods, each with special powers. Destroy enemy armies and hunt wild animals to earn gold. Use the gold to build mighty armies and defeat your enemies. Can you unite the world with your Gods?
Civilization 2
This is the grandfather of all strategy games. It was the first game I ever played that really got me into the genre. You start in the stone age and progress through time to the future. You must build an empire and create a strong enough military to fend off any invaders.
The game has a large number of scenarios, and there are two expansion packs as well.
Alpha Centauri
Taking place in the future where mankind has shot off into space and colonized a new world, you play the leader of your colony. You must build a colony with a strong economy and military to compete with the other colonies while dealing with the harsh environment of the planet.
The game is played on a hex system, like many other games in this genre, which is probably the main reason it is on this list.
Civilization 3
Civilization 3 had a lot of improvements over the original game. It added features like religion, espionage, and the great people system. You have to build a civilization from the dawn of man to the future.
The game uses a map of Earth and the player must manage the resources present in his lands, as well as build cities, towns, and other structures. You can also train units to fight against enemies.
Total War: Shogun 2
Shogun 2 is the most recent game I have played in this genre and is probably the best. It takes place in feudal Japan with you playing the leader of a clan. You must build an army strong enough to defeat your enemies but also have an economic backbone to support it. The game has a great campaign and multiplayer.
Age of Empires
This game is based on the history of the ancient world, which is divided into three civilizations, namely the Babylonians, Assyrians, and Egyptians. In the game, players will lead an army of more than 50 types of troops to conquer new territories or defeat the enemy.
There are more than 10 types of weapons available in the game, including swords, bows, and others. By the way, you can try Age of Empires II, which is also an excellent game available for gamers.
WarCraft III
WarCraft III is a real-time strategy game in the WarCraft series. Players choose one of three races and engage in battle as they try to destroy their enemies and control the map.
WarCraft III features a new resource gathering system, including the ability to harvest lumber from trees, gold from mines, and minerals from rocks. It also features new units, such as the Grunt, Tauren, Peon, and Troll Headhunter.
The game features a single-player campaign, as well as multiplayer mode. The campaign is set in the fictional world of Azeroth. Gameplay includes managing resources, gathering experience points, and items, and expanding territory.
Conclusion
The best strategy games of all time were difficult to put together. There are so many great games in this genre that it was hard to narrow it down to just a few. While there are some older games on this list, this genre has advanced so much over the years that many of the older games don't compare to the newer ones.
You may even have some favorites that aren't on this list. If so, let us know in the comments below.
